Montmartre Between the Line Tour
One of the corners of Paris where the real and the imagined are almost inseparable.
What this experience feels like
Paris lives as both an imagined place and an actual place.
Montmartre is one of the city’s corners where the real and the imagined are almost inseparable. Artists really did live and work here. Still do. There were windmills on the hill, vineyards, cafés, cabarets and dance halls. So much of the Montmartre we imagine actually existed, and enough of it remains that picturing the old hill doesn’t require much imagination at all.
But Montmartre’s story started long before the artists arrived.
Along the route
During our time together, we’ll make our way from the lower streets of Montmartre up the hill, using a mix of its better-known places and the ones we encounter in between to piece together how the neighbourhood has changed and what has managed to stick around.
We’ll talk about the artists, of course, but also about what brought them here in the first place and what Montmartre was like before they arrived. We’ll see how new generation of artists have quite literally left their mark on Montmartre, before making our way toward Sacré-Cœur and that very hard-to-argue-with view of Paris.
There’s quite a lot packed into this hill. We’ll take our time with it.
